Predicting which defensive players will wear the Green Dot and call the defensive players this season.

The “green dot” refers to green sticker on the back of the helmet that is equipped with a headset. One player on offense and one player on defense may wear this special helmet. Through this helmet, coaches can communicate directly with one defensive player. After receiving the play call from the sidelines, the green dot player relays the play call to the rest of the team.

Green Dot Team Notes

Arizona Cardinals

Zaven Collins wore the “green dot” last season, but he has been practicing with the edge rushers. As a result, Kyzir White is getting the first chance to take over the top linebacker spot and the defensive play calling.

Buffalo Bills

I expect whichever player wins the competition for the middle linebacker spot with also call the defensive plays. Matt Milano will continue at weakside linebacker, and we haven’t heard anything about him calling the plays. Tyrel Dodson got the first practice reps at the middle spot and called some defensive plays when Tremaine Edmunds missed time last season.

Terrel Bernard got the first team reps at the middle linebacker spot on Friday 7/28.

Dallas Cowboys

Jayron Kearse wore the “green dot” to finish last season, but it’s possible Leighton Vander Esch is in the mix for 2023.

Indianapolis Colts

It’s great to see Shaquille Leonard back practicing with the first team, but I haven’t seen how they plan to use him next to Zaire Franklin yet. Franklin played middle linebacker while Leonard was ramping up his playing time last season, and there was word that the coaches wanted Leonard to play middle last season, but we never got to see it due to injury. I wouldn’t be surprised if Franklin holds onto his role in the middle and calling the plays for another season.

Miami Dolphins

I haven’t seen any indication of who will wear the green dot with new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Jerome Baker wore the dot last season, but I think David Long but have the lead, but he needs to stay healthy for a full season.

New York Giants

Several players have been practicing with the green dot, including Bobby Okereke and Xavier McKinney. Julian Love called the defensive plays last season.

Washington

Jamin Davis recently had a second excessive speeding violation and could face jail time and a possible suspension. If he misses time, Cody Barton is likely to step up. Hopefully these off-the-field issues do not cause Davis to fall out of favor with the coaching staff.
