Identifying Each Team’s Every down Linebackers is crucial to success in IDP Leagues.

Here are some of the most intriguing storylines we have seen in Week 3.

Arizona Cardinals

While Kyzir White has LB1 locked down we are starting to notice a pattern at LB2,

Mack Wilson logged 87% of snaps in Week 3, which is a vast difference from his 44% output in Week 2. So what happened? In the Rams game he was replaced by a better coverage linebacker (Krys Barnes) and one that could pass rush, so it is safe to say that Wilson is now game-script dependent. Even though the  Lions game showed his tackling strengths and notched eight tackles, I’m still skeptical. This is not good news as Arizona historically runs one LB zone-heavy play formations, he will likely be a stream for me.

Atlanta Falcons

Troy Anderson and Kaden Ellis are your two three down starters ever week moving forward. Anderson is out tackling Ellis 12 to 7 now which would explain the sudden shift to play edge now. Not only did we see Ellis become the edge rusher, but he literally rushed on more than half of his edge snaps. For an IDP perspective you don’t want the pass rusher linebacker (if he rushes, he loses tackle value) you would rather the one over the middle soaking up tackles, so this is not good news for Ellis managers.

Baltimore Ravens

Trenton Simpson‘s 51% usage continues to drop, namely because the team prefers to play a third safety. Simpson is a trade candidate for me but do so before other owners start to suspect the slippage.

Buffalo Bills

As we predicted last week. Braylon Spector logged 100% of snaps and Dorian Williams remains locked up in LB2 role and comes out on passing downs. Historically, the Bills prefer to have set players in roles and have immediate backups who play that in case of injury. Spector should give IDP stability in flex role for the next four weeks or so.

Detroit Lions

Alex Anzalone was out due to concussion so we got to see Jack Campbell become an every-down linebacker. He only achieved four tackles, but I don’t consider that to be a regular thing if he continues in this every-down role.

Derrick Barnes also went down to injuries which makes this even more interesting. Expect Malcolm Rodriguez (aka Hard Knock’s Rodrigo) to factor in as his 86.4% usage was no accident.

Both Campbell and Rodriguez should be worth monitoring and popular waiver wire names this week while Anzalone is out. Jack Campbell looks to be a three-down LB is also very promising, especially during the bye weeks. Jalen Reeves-Maybin 45.6% usage suggests he’s the SAM linebacker now in goal line and rundowns.

Houston Texans

Azeez Al-Shaair played 100% of the snaps, producing 10 tackles. Henry To’oTo’o also had a full-time role, seeing 89% of the snaps. I believe there may be a switch to Harris (The coaching staff likes Harris) once he is fully healthy, but this is something we will have to monitor as To’oTo’o  is showing he could play a full workload.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Foye Oluokun left the game with a foot injury and didn’t return, leading to a rotation of Chad Muma (42.2%), Ventrell Miller (43.8%), and Yasir Abdullah (31.3%) in his place. What makes this situation even worse is that this rotation was already happening before his injury in the second quarter. For those already concerned, this issue with inconsistent linebacker rotations has been evident since the preseason. Now, with Oluokun’s injury, the situation has worsened. Even Devin Lloyd’s snap share (65.6%) remains below expectations, as he continues to be affected by Jacksonville’s rotating linebacker situation.

Kansas City Chiefs

Nick Bolton (78.7%) had a stronger performance than the number would tell you, not only did he have a game-saving tackle at the end of the game, but he also quietly had eight tackles. His snap percentage is only lower than Tranquill because he had an injury that sidelined him for a few plays. Drue Tranquill also played 89% of the snaps but only recorded 3 tackles. Bolton was the more productive linebacker.

Las Vegas Raiders

Don’t be fooled by this. Divine Deablo was inactive for Week 3 and Luke Masterson filled for seven tackles on 70% of the snaps. A popular name this week on waive wire but proves to be fool’s gold. Masterson is not worth rostering unless it’s the deep formats.

Los Angeles Chargers

The news here is Daiyan Henley with 100% snap usage. He will be a waiver wire pickup now that Junior Colson is hurt. This has been a rotation I wanted no part of, but it’s nice seeing that this has shaped up for one linebacker at least in the short term.

With Henley getting 12 tackles this week, it is conceivable to suggest that he could be in every down linebacker territory but I’m still skeptical. For starters, Perryman still got 80% and Colson has high draft capital and ties to this coaching staff. I am expecting a rotation of the three, but in the meantime, Henley is the best of the three options.

Los Angeles Rams

Troy Reeder saw 100% of the snaps and Christian Rozeboom around 80% usage. The Rams remain comfortable with this alignment and should see this until Omar Speights is ready closer to the middle of the season. Reeder has been a trade candidate of mine because of his tackle efficiency but remains holding the job for now. Rozeboom is a career two-down player due to his inability to cover so he’s more of deeper league option.

Miami Dolphins

David Long struggled with injuries yet again (He wasn’t having a great game before the injury either) He was replaced by Anthony Walker. With the potential of Long being out again opens the door for Walker, who played better on tape that the stat line suggests.

Despite only on paper getting 25% of snaps, Anthony Walker played every single on after Long’s injury and became the de facto Green dot. Achieving three tackles on seven plays, for an incredible 43% tackle rate expect that number to go down but should keep him active in our lineups.

Jordyn Brooks played 100% of the snaps and posted 9 tackles these should be the two linebackers to own until Long comes back from injury.

New England Patriots

Tavai got 100% of snaps which was big news considering the Jets kept them out on the field for over 70 plays.

Raekwon McMillan got 73% of the snaps, but I’m not sure he is someone we can trust. He was suspect in the pass and missed a significant number of tackles in this game as the Jets attempted to run at him.

I am not picking up McMillan off waivers unless I am not desperate, consider he has a 46.8 PFF grade.

New Orleans Saints

Pete Werner just might be the guy again.

Interesting development here. What was not seen in the box score but rather on film was Demario Davis left with an injury. Willie Gay saw 41% of the snaps and was in on every snap player after that. Pete Werner received 100% of snaps and became the green dot caller. I would be interested in Werner in this role and should increase his value.

Seattle Seahawks

Rookie Tyrice Knight stepped in for the injured Jerome Baker, giving us a glimpse of his potential. Unfortunately, he didn’t play a full-time role, seeing just 57.4% of the snaps, indicating the team doesn’t yet trust him in passing downs. This isn’t a promising sign, and he’s not startable for me unless you’re in deeper leagues.

On the other hand, Tyrel Dodson played all but 6 snaps and continues to live up to expectations with solid performance.

Tamp Bay Buccaneers

Lavonte David is the only every-down linebacker worth rostering. While the LB2 eat into each other’s snaps.

The LB2 duo of  KJ Britt and Sirvocea Dennis is going to be frustrating for IDP manager on a weekly basis. Both players are limited in their abilities so the team will scheme to get the most out of them, which is unfortunate for snap volume.

Tennessee Titans

The only thing worth mentioning here is Kenneth Murray (8 tackles) continues to be the green dot. Ernest Jones (13 tackles) along with Murray are your every down linebacker to own in this LB room. The Titans play a lot of nickel so you won’t see much playing time out of Otis Reece or Jack Gibbens (0 snaps)
