Here are some of the most intriguing storylines we have seen in Week 8.

Atlanta Falcons

The news was Kaden Elliss got injured, only missing three plays though, but did give a snapshot and better understanding of how the linebacker corps works. Nate Landman playing the team’s inside LB role got 54% usage and wore the green dot (as we have seen before in only three-linebacker packages) being in a resourceful position allowed him to achieve six tackles. JD Bertrand also mixed in, achieving 22% of the snaps. Bertrand made great use of his limited time, getting two tackles in this game. It’s nice to know what a team’s “batting order” would be, but all of this isn’t truly meaningful as Troy Andersen is expected to return next week.

Baltimore Ravens

Mostly because of game scripts, and what the Browns were doing on offense, but this game feature two linebackers in an (almost) every-down role.

As per the usual, Roquan Smith performed as his every down usual self, but the news here was Trenton Simpson was on the field for all but two snaps, achieving a 97% snap rate but only achieving four tackles. As previously reported on the RPO Podcast, this team likes to walk young linebackers in slowly. They did the same thing with Patrick Queen and even started the year with three safety packages the same way they are employing Simpson now too. It may be too early to say this indefinitely, but the Ravens may actually be trying to use Simpson on all three downs, at least if the game script merits it. Oh, speaking of the RPO Football Show podcast check out our week six takes as this viewing hit 3.2K views for us! IDP Review Week 6 “Wrap Up” Show

This next week they will play the Broncos, which is another team expecting to run the ball. This could be a good run of some good Trenton Simpson usage.

Buffalo Bills

Déjà vu anyone? Baylon Spector got the start again, green dot play call duties, and 100% snaps and ended up with five tackles. Dorian Williams the LB2 per usual, 63% was out on all obvious passing downs and achieved two tackles. Both players stank up the joint, so not much to see here at all.

Carolina Panthers

Josey Jewell became every down linebacker post-injury with 100%, and a ten-tackle performance. We anticipated a decline for Trevin Wallace, now becoming the LB2 but it wasn’t by too much he still has 89% of snaps with four tackles and a forced fumble. He spoiled us with all those huge tackle weeks, so it seems like a low number,  but with his high snap count usage you could still consider him a flex option in IDP Leagues.

Cleveland Browns

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah got injured attempting to hit the bus that is known as Derrick Henry. This opened more opportunities for Mohamoud Diabate, who achieved eight tackles, played 100% every down role once the injury happened, and even wore the green dot. Devin Bush was also active, but his usual meh self, with 34 snaps. Since Hicks is still hurt, and if JOK’s injury lingers, Diabate is the priority waiver claim option.

Denver Broncos

Kwon Alexander (21.3%) continues to eat Justin Strnad‘s snap value (61%) This is more of the same thing we saw last week with Strnad’s snap usage (61%). This is incredibly frustrating as Strnad was putting up 77%, 73%, and 76% in the three games post-Alexander.

On a positive note, Strnad has been relatively successful with nine, seven, eight, and seven tackle games in the last four games but with a dwindling snap count expect to have a few dud games mixed in down the stretch.

Cody Barton is your only 100% snap guy but he is coming off a poor two-tackle game; this should not happen often and owners should explore owners who suffer from recency bias.

Detroit Lions

LB2 Malcolm Rodriguez sustained an ankle injury, which may make him miss a few games. This gave Jack Campbell more playing time, as he logged 94% of the snaps, and produced ten tackles. This is big news as that would move Campbell into every-down territory.

Green Bay Packers

Eric Wilson, due to injury,  played 100% of the snaps and wore the green dot. But the news here is Edgerrin Cooper getting the snaps over McDuffie. He made good use of his time producing nine tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. This marked a career game for Cooper, who was many folks 1.01 pick in IDP Rookie Drafts this year. Expect him to be in the LB2 role moving forward.

Houston Texans

Neville Hewitt one more time got his 100% snaps, waiver-wire enthusiasts do not get too excited as this will go away soon once injuries clear up as early as next week, as we all could expect. The big trending news here is Devin White actually did in fact cut into Jake Hansen‘s playing time both rotating evenly at 50% each. This kills both Hansen’s and White’s values at the same time. Because these three guys are all deep-league options anyway, and only used because the starters were injured you could look at other options to fill your bench.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Foye Oluokun played 91.4% of snaps. Nearly every down player again coming off injury, Oluokun only missed a half dozen snaps before half-time before coming in to play every down when the team needed him the most. Promising value here and can be counted on again as a locked-in option again. Be mindful that this coaching staff has broken our hearts before, but at the draft stock, you had to buy him you better play him.

The LB2 rotation is a hot mess with Devin Lloyd at 55.7% and Ventrell Miller at 60% both underperforming. At this rate, I feel like Lloyd is a sell candidate for me (or a buy depending on how you IDP owners look at it) due to the fact that he’s LB2 with erratic use. I don’t want to have the headache of dealing with this so he’s on the trade block his next big game.

Los Angeles Rams

With Troy Reeder not being able to play and going to IR, it was everyone’s guessing game who would start for TNF as the green dot. It turned out to be Omar Speights and not Jake Hummel

Speights played first and second downs, and as expected younger players came out on the obvious passing downs. He called several plays well and was all over the ball. Christian Rozeboom served as the full-time off-ball linebacker, missing only three snaps and ending with a 94% snap rate. Speights, with promising PFF grades yet again should get more reps as the season progresses.

Miami Dolphins

The news here is David Long becomes an every-down linebacker again, playing 64 of 66 snaps (97%) with nine tackles. He is playable again as no signs of Anthony Walker vulturing any snaps any time soon. As we reported previously, they were taking their time nursing him along to pair up with teammate Jordyn Brooks who also had nine tackles and had 100% snap share. It’s interesting to note that Long wears the green dot.

Minnesota Vikings

Ivan Pace wore the dot and played 100% of the snaps. With Cashman out, the Vikings deployed just one off-ball linebacker, giving Kamu Grugier-Hill only six snaps.  Pace is the obvious owner as previously stated now with the Blake Cashman injury.

New England Patriots

Jahlani Tavai lost a lot of snap count work with only 79% snaps, this is bad news considering he was nearly every down player before this happened. Christian Elliss played well enough to get 83.9% with nine tackles and a sack. Ellis is preferred for tackling game script, so this is probably why. I would not consider him a locked-down starter at all, but he will have now and again will have decent games. Raekwon McMillan is droppable (if you haven’t already) and is an afterthought.

New York Jets

Quincy Williams played 100% of the snaps. Jamien Sherwood wore the green dot and played 65 of 67 snaps. Surratt also filled in as a rotating player. The interesting take is that here is C.J. Mosley was active and was irrelevant. As each week passes, it seems like Mosley is farther and farther away from regaining his starting role, so IDP managers need to mindful of this hot take. Sherwood has now logged 45 total tackles over the last four weeks, 22 of them solos. Williams and Sherwood could be played in most IDP Leagues.

Seattle Seahawks

Ernest Jones is the first player ever traded twice in an NFL Season, this time to the Seahawks, and he starts an every-down role immediately. The takeaways here- this team runs two every down linebacker and Jones played 100% of the snaps, leading the team with 15 tackles. Tyrel Dodson also played every snap and continued to wear the dot, boosting his production with seven tackles. This move to the weak side could actually helped Dodson as he could avoid the blockers who commonly take on interior linebackers. Both are playable in every format.
