IDP Player Profile – Carl Granderson
During the 2022 season, the Saints defense was Top 5 in the league with 48 sacks. Surprisingly, the team’s defense was near the bottom of the league in quarterback pressures. One player that converted a high ratio of pressures to sacks was Carl Granderson.
Early Years
Granderson signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but later that year he was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading “no-contest to one count of sexual battery and one count of unlawful contact”. After 45 days in jail, Granderson was released and set out to focus on football. During his first two years with the Saints, he was a rotation guy, but he was a player that Dennis Allen trusted. Allen was the Saints’ defensive coordinator from 2015-2021 but became the head coach in 2022. Allen made sure to bring back Granderson and signed him to a new two-year free agent deal.
2022 Season
In the beginning of the season, Granderson was behind Marcus Davenport on the depth chart. In the first nine weeks of the season, he only averaged 4.9 fantasy points on limited snaps.
However, in the middle of the season, Granderson took over the starting spot opposite Cameron Jordan. Granderson lined up as the edge rusher on the right side while Jordan lined up as the edge rusher on the left side. In Weeks 10 through 18, Granderson averaged 12.8 fantasy points and was the most-efficient edge rusher on the team. With five and a half sacks and nine quarterback hits, 2022 was his best statistical season so far.

2023 Outlook
Looking at the Saints 2023 roster, Cameron Jordan is still the anchor of the defensive line, Marcus Davenport has departed for Minnesota and Payton Turner has struggled to stay on the field due to injuries. So, now Granderson has a prime opportunity to step up in 2023. I believe Granderson has all the tools to have a breakout season and recommend you make sure he is on your fantasy roster.
