5 Start, 5 Sit for Week 2 of the 2023 NFL Season

With one week in the books, making decisions about your starters gets a little easier. Still, sometimes figuring out who deserves the nod on your fantasy team can be tough. What I have for you here is a list of guys that I would try to find some way to get into your starting lineup. Following that is a list of guys that I think you’d be better off letting rest on your bench for a week!

Start:

QB: Jordan Love – Start

Jordan Love didn’t have to throw it many times to rack up a top 5 quarterback performance. On only 15 completions, he put up 245 yards and 3 touchdowns, adding 12 yards on the ground. Unfortunately for him, he only gets to play the Bears twice a year and this week he will have to play a defense that’s a little bit better. Atlanta played tough last week but I think that the Packers’ offense will do much better than the Panthers’. Love is potentially getting Christian Watson back this week which would make him an even better start.

RB: Tyler Allgeier – Start

I’m not sure if the touch distribution will stay the same as the year goes on, but if week 1 is any indication, Allgeier is still very valuable as a fantasy asset. The Falcons are most certainly a run first team, and they’re damn good at it. Even with Bijan Robinson also lighting it up, he was able to put up top 10 RB numbers. I don’t see the Packers defense being a tougher run defense than the Panthers, so I would definitely roll Tyler Allgeier as an RB2/3 this week.

WR: Zay Flowers – Start

Lamar Jackson only threw the ball 22 times last weekend but 10 of those attempts went Zay Flowers’ way. Getting that many targets in a game that was fairly one-sided tells me that Flowers is probably going to be a prime target going forward. The Ravens were playing without Mark Andrews, but I think Flowers will still be able to command a similar target share in a game that will require more passes. Get Zay Flowers into your starting rosters this week!

TE: Hayden Hurst – Start

Hurst ended as the leading target for the Panthers last week, which isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. Bryce Young struggled to get anything going and Hurst acted as a security blanket for the rookie QB. With another tough defense this week in the Saints, I think we can expect another lackluster performance for Young. It might mean, however, that Hurst can scavenge a top 5 TE performance just from short yardage volume. If you play in a league with a tight end premium, he’s definitely worth running with your starters.

FLEX: Nico Collins – Start

Just like Zay Flowers, Nico Collins led his team in targets, but he also led his team in fantasy points too. As one of the only fantasy relevant players on the Texans, Nico has the potential to be a top 30 receiver this year. In a division matchup against the Colts, I think he could be a very high-end flex or even a WR3 this week. If you’ve been following me through the offseason, you’ll know I’m very high on Nico Collins, so it is great to see him have early success.

QB: Dak Prescott – Sit

Looking at the Cowboy’s 40-point win over the Giants last week, you would think that Prescott must’ve played great. That could not be further from the truth. He went 13/24 for only 143 yards against a team that literally could not stop  making mistakes. This week the Cowboys get to play a real defense and I’m expecting Prescott to continue his trend of mediocrity, this time with some interceptions included.

RB: Najee Harris – Sit

Through four quarters of football, Najee Harris has only touched the ball 8 times…8 times. He was out-touched by his backup Jalen Warren, 9 to 8. Granted, the 49ers probably have the best all-around defense in the league, but still those are abysmal numbers. The Steelers’ offense looked horrible last week and until there is a visible improvement, I will be fading Harris and probably most other players on the team as well.

WR: Every Receiver on the Kansas City Chiefs – Sit

If one thing could be learned from the Chiefs’ first game, it is that none of their wide outs are worth anything in fantasy. Especially if Travis Kelce plays this week, I wouldn’t expect any of those guys to see more than 4 targets. Maybe they will be able to make something happen on a big play, but you can’t really depend on that. You almost certainly will have better options, so for now I’d stay away.

TE: Kyle Pitts – Sit

At this point it’s almost not funny anymore how underutilized Pitts is. For as dominant of a player as he should be, to only be targeted 3 times in a close game is criminal. The Falcons live and breathe the running game and even when they do pass, HALF of the targets are to running backs. Until the passing volume of this team increases, I would stay away from Pitts (and London).

FLEX: Puka Nacua – Sit

We all love a breakout performance in week 1 to add a little spice to our fantasy lives. However, I don’t foresee a successful repeat for Nacua in week 2 against the 49ers. He led the league in targets with 15 (tied with Tyreek Hill) and led his team in yards (tied Tutu Atwell with 119). But this week he faces much stiffer competition. That’s not to say he won’t still be relevant later in the season, but I think that San Francisco is going to play their division opponent very tough, and I don’t think Nacua gets back to top 10 numbers.
